• Start with 150 mg once per day for three days.
• On the fourth day, start taking 150 mg twice per day; continue this dose for the remainder of treatment.
• Doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart.
• Do not exceed 300 mg of Zyban per day.
• Swallow tablets whole; do not crush, chew, or dissolve.
• Treatment typically continues for 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes longer if needed.

Effects vary to some extent between individuals; some smokers find it easy to quit early in treatment, while others continue to smoke periodically for an additional month or two. If there is not a considerable reduction in smoking by week 8 alternative options should be considered.

Adverse Effects

The most common side effects of Zyban are dry mouth and insomnia, neither of which are cause for concern unless severe enough to be disruptive.

Though rare, occasionally serious adverse reactions are experienced which warrant medical attention:

• Severe anxiety or confusion
• Difficulty breathing
• Irregular heartbeat
• Hallucinations
• Seizures

Patients with a history of seizures, or taking medications to suppress seizures, may be at greater risk of having seizures while taking Zyban.

Zyban may interact with other medications, particularly other antidepressants. Check with a doctor or pharmacists before mixing medications if unsure of safety.
